Founded at the merger of Air Austria and Austrian Airways on September 30, 1957, Austrian Airlines went for its first flight on March 31, 1958 when a Vickers Viscount 779 took off from Vienna for London. However, Austrian Airlines commenced its transatlantic services on April 1, 1969.
Austrian Airlines has flown from Vienna to Mumbai since November 2010 and resumed flights to Baghdad on 8 June 2011. On October 25, 1997, Austrian Airlines provided its first non-stop connectivity to Delhi. Austrian Airlines operated twice a week in the year 1997 using an airbus A310. This twice-weekly service has turned into daily flights with Delhi being served by a Boeing 777 in the winters. However, Mumbai got incorporated as the second Indian city in the schedule of Austrian Airlines. Austrian airlines began operating five flights a week in September 2005. In the first year itself, around 26,000 passengers used the service to India and now Austrian Airlines carries over 200,000 passengers a year to India.
