Bangkok airways was established in 1968 as Sahakol Air operating air-taxi services under contract from Overseas International Construction Company (OICC), United States Operations Mission (USOM) and a number of other organizations engaged in oil and natural-gas exploration in the Gulf of Thailand. Later, it started its scheduled services in 1986, becoming the first privately owned domestic airline. The airline re-branded to become Bangkok airways in 1989. The airline constructed its own airport on Koh Samui, which was opened in April 1989 and provides direct flights between the island and Chiang Mai, Hong Kong, Krabi, Pattaya, Phuket and Singapore. It opened its second airport at Sukhothai Province in 1996, while the third one was built in Trat Province in March 2003 to serve the growing tourism destination of Ko Chang.

Officially, known as Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited, it is a regional airline, which is based in Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, Chatuchak District, Bangkok, Thailand. Bangkok Airways’ main hub is Suvarnabhumi Airport, located in Bangkok.  The flight operates scheduled services to destinations in Thailand, China, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Maldives, Laos, Burma, India and Singapore. Presently, Bangkok Airways is an official sponsor of Bangkok Glass FC, Trat FC, Chiang Mai FC, Sukhothai FC, Lampang FC and Bangkok Christian College FC. Airline ranking company Skytrax has constantly ranked Bangkok Airlines giving it a four-star rating. The present fleet of this airline includes 8 ATR 72-500s, 10 Airbus 319s, and 7 Airbus 320s; each aircraft decorated in different liveries of several exotic destinations. It has a frequent flyer program called "Flyer Bonus", which offer priority and additional services to the privileged guests.

Passengers traveling with Bangkok Airlines are only allowed to check-in with allowed to carry a maximum weight of 20 Kg for adult and child & 10 Kg for Infant for Economy class passenger. On the other hand, Blue Ribbon Class (Business Class) passengers are permitted to carry 30 kg for adult and child / 10 Kg for infant. For Carry-on baggage, all passengers can carry one small personal item like, a purse or laptop, and 1 carryon bag weighing 5 Kg.

Bangkok Airlines started the “Web Check-in” facility in September 2008 for passengers travelling from its key domestic Routss. The service enables passengers to easily check-in online and select their preferred seat as early as from 24 hours up to 2 hours prior before departure time of flight, by clicking on “Web Check-in” at airline’s official website . Passengers simply bring printed boarding pass to the designated counter to get the quick ID verification and baggage check (if required). The web check-in service is offered initially to passengers who fly from Bangkok, Samui and Phuket to other domestic destinations and will shortly be available for other in near future.
