Thai Airways originated in 1960 as a joint venture of Scandinavian Airlines System and Thai Airways Company. The reason behind this joint venture was to create an international section for a domestic carrier. On 1st April 1977, Thai government bought all the shares of SAS-owned shares of the joint venture and finally Thai Airways was fully owned by the Thai government. On 14th May 1997, Thai Airways founded the world’s first and largest airline alliance, Star Alliance along with Lufthansa, Air Canada, Scandinavian Airlines System, and United Airlines.
